The story behind the scholarship
In the aftermath of the horrendous terrorist action in Oslo on July 22nd 2011, the SFOMK board decided in collaboration with the AAOMS to actively support humanitarian aid work within our field of practice.
The AAOMS board made the proposal, to fund a grant for two dedicated OMS surgeons, one American and one Scandinavian, to cover their living and travelling-expenses whilst working for Mercy Ships.
Next year Dr. Gerry Parker will be made honorary member of the AAOMS for his outstanding twenty- five years of work on Mercy Ships. The AAOMS has donated 10.000 US for this purpose.
This proposition was well received by the general assembly of the SFOMK, which took place during the SFOMK/AAOMS congress in Philadelphia last autumn.
A unanimous decision was made to donate monetary funding (10.000 NKr) sponsored by Astra for humanitarian purposes as well as the 2012 SFOMK scholarship (3000 Euro) towards this cause.
At present, negotiations are taking place between Mercy Ships, the boards of AAOMS and SFOMK in order to settle the finer details. Our aim is to find an oral surgeon/oral and maxillofacial surgeon with a broad field of experience who wishes to work on Mercy ships for a min. period of two weeks.
Normally, the volunteers cover all their own expenses. However, in this instance the SFOMK will cover all expenses up to a maximum of 4300 Euro. |
